In majority of the countries in the world, including the US, the development and use of petroleum and natural gas deposits goes back to the late 19th century. In practical terms, all major petroleum and natural gas formations on land have already been discovered. The development of oil and gas fields has been an ongoing concern for many decades. The wells in theses fields have already yielded a significant part of their total oil and gas. Over a period of time, irreversible processes have taken place in the near-well zones: the formation of and filling of the pores in the rock of the near-well zone with light fractions of productive rock, capillarization, which leads also to the blocking of channels, the swelling of the argillaceous minerals in the rock, and so forth. It is known that over a period of time, wells lose their initial output and become economically unjustifiable. At the present time, wells of this type number in the thousands in oil and gas fields all over the world. In Northern California alone there are more then 10,000 abandoned or low producing wells.
